While technology has changed the way we grow marijuana indoors dramatically over the last two decades, surprisingly most growers still use and believe in outdated lighting equipment.
Today’s growers have access to the best and most sophisticated growing systems of all time, but still fail to upgrade one key area...lighting!
We took a look at the different new alternatives to the traditional HPS, MH and T- type set ups in favor of the newer and in some cases more energy conscience grow light setups. More specifically I'm talking about LED and CFL Grow Light units.
After testing and independent research on both types of grow lights the CFL units came out heads and shoulders above LED's, MH, and yes, even HPS grow light units!

Keep in mind not all CFL grow lights are createdequal! CFL systems need slightly more than the stated equivalent to get the same results as HPS or MH (not the same power bill tho..) CFL bulbs must also be pointed in the correct direction with a directional hood for the maximum benefit.
We did find one company from Oregon that’s got it right: CFL-GrowLight.com

Those guys build a 1400 watt veg unit that kicks ass! They also build a couple bigger unit’s but the 1400w unit it is like having a 1000k HPS AND a 200w MH light together all in one unit!
These are the best grow lights period.

Todays Stealth Marijuana Grow Lighting

There was a time not so long ago when growing marijuana indoors was a crazy proposition fraught with the real and constant danger of going to jail. A time when stealth growing indoors meant you had to watch the power consumption closely and the heat signature from the HPS bulbs if you grew in the attic of your home.

Stealth or Ninja growing meant taking a huge risk since growing was illegal in all states just a few years ago. The equipment available to growers at that time just wasn't stealthy or ninja like. In fact, compared to some of today's options, the clunky HPS and MH hoods and ballast combo's seem like using the old "brick" phone vs today's iPhone and Androids.
Today things are much different. Today's growers have tons of equipment options for any scenario imaginable since now marijuana is semi legal in 13 states and counting. Because of this increase in demand, today's growers have more grow light choices than ever. CFL's to HPS, MH, Fluorescent, with LED's, all vie for attention for today's modern indoor marijuana ninja growers and traditional pot growers.
While not all growers are convinced, there has been a clear winner in the battle for the best indoor grow light based on the results. CFL systems, if constructed properly outperformed other light sources. To be fair, the LED's  also perform very well, but their initial cost to purchase, small light spread and unreliability (the individual LEDs go out and can not be replaced) pretty much ex's LEDs out. However for the smaller stealth grow boxes LED's are king.
For everything else CFL's are by far and away the best stealth and non stealth indoor grow option. CFL units can provide more light for vegetation in the same space than any traditional fluorescent unit (T-5's & MH) and as much or more light in the flowering stage than HPS units can provide.
One company, CFL-GrowLight.com has designed what looks to be the best CFL fixture yet. They sell a 1400w unit that outperforms the best 1000w HPS units at a fraction of the cost for any 1000w hps system.

So where do I start? There's so many benefits...Ever burned a plant before? Yea, me too and it sucks! You wont burn your plants with CFL's! And did you know a 1000W HPS unit is capable of producing over 150,000 lumen? Did you know ONLY 13% of all that lumen is actually usable to plants? Yup, that's right. So a kick ass 1000w HPS system is going to give you a cool 19,500 - 20,000 lumen for 6 months while costing you $150 - $200 bucks a month in power. Meanwhile the 1400w CFL grow light system kicks out 24,400 lumen IN THE COLOR SPECTRUM'S THE PLANTS NEED for 2+ years without any light quality degradation and a power consumption bill under $50 bucks. Oh, and with the CFL's ...I don't need a fan just to cool my lights. ☺
